The Tip Sheet: More Upsets On the Way?
By Tony Gerdeman

COLUMBUS — It's another boring slate of games that features only one contest between ranked opponents, just like last week. Of course, last week we also had two Top 10 teams get upset and nearly a couple of others. So as we said a week ago, even the worst week of college football is still better than the best days of other sports.

So no, there aren't necessarily any marquee games, but at least one Top 10 team has lost each of the last four weeks, so that trend tells us it's going to continue this week, so that gives us something to look forward to.

So who are you rooting for this week? Let's check it out.

Thursday Oct 29

Teams: North Carolina (6-1, 3-0) at #23 Pittsburgh (6-1, 4-0)
Time (TV): 7:00 pm (ESPN)
Interest: 2
Cheer For: Pittsburgh

Do you realize that we are a four-point North Carolina loss and a three-point Pittsburgh loss from having a game that nobody cares about between two 7-0 ACC teams? That's pretty amazing. This is a huge game in the Coastal Division, and yes, I had to look at the standings to find out if these two teams were in the same division. They really should split up the ACC geographically and rename the divisions the Snowbirds and the Hillfolk. This is a huge game in the Hillfolk Division. The winner will keep pace with Duke, who is also undefeated in the conference.
Pittsburgh 31 - North Carolina 30

Teams: West Virginia (3-3, 0-3) at #5 TCU (7-0, 4-0)
Time (TV): 7:30 pm (FS1)
Interest: 4
Cheer For: West Virginia

For a Thursday night in a week with not a lot of great games, this is one of those contests where something hinky could happen. TCU is favored by 14 points, which isn't a lot, and it's mainly because of the points that the Horned Frogs have allowed this season. SMU scored 37, Texas Tech put up 52, and Kansas State scored 45 points on them. Given Dana Hologorsen's track record, we should expect West Virginia to put up some points. Remember, it was WVU that beat Baylor last year and cost the Bears a playoff spot. Could they do the same to TCU? If Gus Johnson has anything to say about it, this should be a good one.
TCU 59 - West Virginia 38

Teams: Oregon (4-3, 2-2) at Arizona State (4-3, 2-2)
Time (TV): 10:30 pm (ESPN)
Interest: 1.5
Cheer For: Oregon

We make fun of the SEC's preseason rankings, but back in August this would have been a matchup between the No. 7 Oregon Ducks and the No. 15 Arizona State Sun Devils. And we would have had to stay up late on a Thursday night to watch at least half of it. Now we can go to bed after the first quarter, which will no doubt be some painful football, but at least our insomnia will be cured. The bad news, however, is that our night terrors are starting back up tonight.
Arizona State 37 - Oregon 31

Saturday Oct 31

Teams: #19 Ole Miss (6-2, 3-1) at Auburn (4-3, 1-3)
Time (TV): 12:00 pm (ESPN)
Interest: 1.5
Cheer For: Ole Miss

You are cheering for Auburn because we enjoy getting angry and throwing ashtrays at the television, which then breaks the antennae, which was already broken in the first place because STUPID DARLENE CAN'T WALK STRAIGHT. Actually, you're cheering for Ole Miss because you don't want Alabama in the SEC Championship Game and as long as the Rebels keep winning, the Tide can't get there. Sorry for the confusion, but that's life as an SEC fan. You're never really sure who you might be rooting for from week to week.
Ole Miss 34 - Auburn 20

Teams: Illinois (4-3, 1-2) at Penn State (6-2, 3-1)
Time (TV): 12:00 pm (ESPN2)
Interest: 2
Cheer For: Penn State

You are cheering for Penn State because, dang it, you don't want to see any more coaches lose their jobs. The Pennsylvania economy isn't friendly to those looking for jobs, especially in the middle of nowhere like State College. The only jobs in the region are lumber services and cow maintenance, and James Franklin doesn't seem like a cow or tree guy to me.
Penn State 27 - Illinois 17

Teams: Nebraska (3-5, 1-3) at Purdue (1-6, 0-3)
Time (TV): 12:00 pm (ESPNU)
Interest: 2
Cheer For: Nebraska

Something has to give when the Big Ten's Washington Generals travel to the Big Ten's Cleveland Browns. If Nebraska loses this game, then it's time to go ahead and fire Mike Riley because the football gods just aren't having it. The Huskers have lost their five games by a total of 13 points. I normally chalk up close losses to poor coaching, but this is something beyond that. This is some type of karmic retribution or the Earth righting itself after decades of man's destruction. That's probably what it is. The Earth is rebelling from its fossil fuels being plundered by man and is taking it out on Nebraska. I can't blame her.
Nebraska 28 - Purdue 20

Teams: South Carolina (3-4, 1-4) at Texas A&M (5-2, 2-2)
Time (TV): 12:00 pm (SECN)
Interest: 1
Cheer For: South Carolina

South Carolina had a week off to get ready for this game, but considering how much of a mess the Aggies are right now, it's really hard to prepare for them. It's like trying to give a description of what you see in a kaleidoscope to a police sketch artist. Maybe that chaos is actually a good thing this week. Actually, nothing could be bad because South Carolina's season is over. In fact, Gamecock football might be over for a very long time. Actually, playing in the SEC East, anybody can compete — except for Butch Jones and Tennessee, of course.
Texas A&M 34 - South Carolina 10

Teams: Rutgers (3-4, 1-3) at Wisconsin (6-2, 3-1)
Time (TV): 12:00 pm (BTN)
Interest: 1
Cheer For: Wisconsin

I swear I've already had to talk about this game, but I'm just confusing it with every other uninteresting noon Big Ten game this week. I should just write here what I wrote in those games, but I didn't write anything worthwhile in any of those previews, so I'm kind of screwed now and I have to come up with some quality analysis. Last night I had a dream and in that dream there was a part that was like a commercial for an upcoming scene in a television show that said "Coming up later in this dream, a bear attack!" So I was like, "Well, that's concerning." And so later on in the dream it happened again and was like, "Up next, a bear attack." And it was at that point when my alarm went off and saved me. Actually, I know a lot of karate and fighting skills in my dreams, so I like to think that the alarm actually saved the bear.
Wisconsin 31 - Rutgers 21

Teams: USC (4-3, 2-2) at California (5-2, 2-2)
Time (TV): 3:00 pm (FOX)
Interest: 2.5
Cheer For: California

Cal has lost its last two games, which means the Bears are finally reverting back to their true selves. USC, meanwhile, is coming off of a 42-24 win over No. 3 Utah and has shown that they believe they've found something with interim head coach Clay Helton. There are still plenty of tickets available, but it's a bit of a scam because for every ticket you purchase, you also have to buy a hippie. That's why I would just stick with StubHub, because there are no hippies attached on the secondary market. If you do watch this game, you will get to see two of the best quarterbacks in the nation, and if you're lucky, the camera will find their girlfriends in the stands as well.
USC 41 - California 38
