Joey Bosa's OSU Career Over Following Ejection in First Quarter of Fiesta Bowl
By Tony Gerdeman

COLUMBUS — Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa’s career as a Buckeye is now over after a targeting call was upheld in the first quarter of the Battlefrog Fiesta Bowl Friday afternoon.

A junior, Bosa has already announced his intentions to bypass his final year of eligibility and enter the 2016 NFL Draft. He is expected to be a Top 5 pick.

Bosa, who had already amassed three tackles in less than one quarter of play against the Irish, was pressuring Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer on the play where he was penalized. Kizer released the ball just prior to being hit and the pass was intercepted by Buckeye safety Tyvis Powell.

A flag was immediately thrown, however, and replay showed Bosa lowering his head and hitting Kizer in the chest with the crown of his helmet.

The targeting rule was then reviewed and upheld. The rule as it pertains to Bosa’s case states that “No player shall target and make forcible contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of the helmet. When in question, it is a foul.”

After leaving the field of play, Bosa offered up an apology via Twitter late in the second quarter.

"I'm sorry, I love you buckeye nation," he wrote.

Joey Bosa leaves Ohio State as a two-time First-Team All-American with 37 career starts in 41 games played as a Buckeye. He finished his career No. 4 in OSU history with 50.5 tackles for loss and No. 3 in sacks with 26.0. He finished two spots higher, and with two more sacks, than his uncle Eric Kumerow.

He also finishes with 149 career tackles, five forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Both recoveries were returned for touchdowns.

His forced fumbles and fumble recoveries led to 44 points for the Buckeyes.
