Two-Minute Drill: Urban Meyer Post-Practice Updates April 4
By Tony Gerdeman

Urban Meyer spoke with the media on Tuesday to provide updates on how spring practice is going for the Buckeyes. He had plenty to say about his team. Here are the highlights.

+ Meyer said if they went six or seven deep at cornerback like Kerry Coombs suggested last week, they wouldn't be very good right now. He doesn't foresee seven cornerbacks playing. He's expecting three or four to rotate. Coombs has done a great job of developing the cornerbacks. The NFL has never come to Ohio State looking for zone cornerbacks, only man-to-man.

+ The defensive line is the strength of the defense right now. Hoping Tracy Sprinkle gets back to where he was last year. He challenges anybody to show him a better group of defensive ends in the nation.

+ Tate Martell had his best day during Saturday's scrimmage. Joe Burrow is still ahead of Dwayne Haskins right now. The deep ball percentage last week was the best it's been all spring. Accuracy was almost 90%, but they didn't catch all of them.

+ Asked who has made a jump this spring, Meyer said J.K. Dobbins had a really good scrimmage. He rolled his ankle today, but he'll be fine. Demario McCall is doing well. Mike Weber is separating himself. He's had an exceptional spring.

+ Parris Campbell and Terry McClaurin have been excellent. Binjimen Victor and Austin Mack are battling minor injuries, but they're coming on.

+ Tight ends are the most-improved position on the team. A.J. Alexander is really coming on. Luke Farrell is a bit ahead of Jake Hausmann.

+ Demetrius Knox is running with the ones at right guard. Matt Burrell is one of the most improved linemen right now. Very pleased with the offensive line right now. Need more competition with the twos.

+ The four defensive ends are elite. Jonathon Cooper still hasn't practiced much due to his hamstring. He'll be back on Thursday. Dre'Mont Jones continues to play well inside.

+ Chris Worley is having an excellent spring in the middle. Justin Hilliard is making a push. Malik Harrison is done for the spring with shoulder surgery, but he's going to play this year. He's going to compete for a starting spot.

+ Damon Webb is much improved. The other safety position is still a toss up.

+ Denzel Ward and Damon Arnette have been excellent. The freshmen are competing with them.

+ J.T. Barrett's footwork has been worked on. "You can see that he's really improving."

+ Meyer told a few of the early enrollees that there may not be room for them in the winter. He explained that to them early on. He told Josh Myers, Brendon White, and Marcus Williamson that they may have to pay for the first semester. Due to the NFL departures, only one had to pay their way.

+ Meyer said they are at 85 scholarships right now but didn't want to say more right now.

+ Kicker Blake Haubeil will be here in the summer. Sean Nuernberger has been okay this spring.

+ This team is very strong at the top and the bottom in terms of experience. The 2015 class is starting to change and mature and come forward. That was a misfit class that is starting to buy in.

+ The spring is for trying new things because you can't do it during the season.

+ He would like to see all four defensive ends and Dre'Mont Jones on the field together somehow.

+ The early enrollees have not hit a wall yet.

+ They have missed on more than a few offensive linemen in recruiting. "True freshmen should not play here. That's because there were some misses there. Very disappointed in that. We can't miss again."

+ Meyer looks for toughness when recruiting offensive linemen. Number two is athleticism, and then you have to be the ultimate grinder. If you're not those three then you'll miss. They have had about two classes that didn't turn out.

+ Sam Hubbard is the definition of elite. "He's as elite as I've ever been around."

+ Knowledge of the offense and lack of "go-hard" was what kept Binjimen Victor off the field last year. When he's right he can do anything he wants.
