Two-Time First-Team All-State Defensive Lineman

The Player
Jerron Cage is a 6-foot-2 282-pound defensive tackle from Winton Woods High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. His brother Daniel is a defensive tackle at Notre Dame. Cage committed to the Buckeyes over offers from Notre Dame, Kentucky, Illinois, and Cincinnati. He committed pretty early on as Ohio State didn't want to lose him to Notre Dame like they did his brother. As a player, Cage spent time at both defensive end and defensive tackle in high school, but he will be on the interior for the Buckeyes. He's a more effective pass rusher from the inside at times because he is closer to the football and can blade through double teams.

The Comparison
Watching his highlights, I'm reminded of David Patterson, who played defensive end a bit for the Buckeyes even though he was defensive tackle-sized. Cage is listed at 6-foot-2, but that works for him inside. He is instant pursuit and shoots into the backfield at the stop, not unlike Davon Hamilton or even Robert Landers. He is able to regather himself after getting past his man and pursue the ball with effectiveness like Dre'Mont Jones. Like Jones, he is an active tackler.

The Fit
Jerron Cage fits in as a three technique defensive tackle who is completely comfortable rushing the passer, which is what Larry Johnson is always looking for. He'll obviously need to show that he can defend the run, but he is able to split double teams which causes the kind of havoc inside that the Buckeyes want.

The Depth Chart
Right now there isn't much need for a true freshman defensive tackle to see action for the Buckeyes because of the sheer number of three technique guys OSU has on the roster. Ohio State will have Dre'Mont Jones, Tracy Sprinkle, Davon Hamilton, Jashon Cornell, and Malik Barrow all ahead of Cage to start fall camp.

The Future
Cage should be expected to redshirt in 2017 simply because of the number of players in front of him. It's not going to be easy for him to get enough reps in practice to show he belongs as a rookie. Things could open up relatively quickly after 2017, however, as Sprinkle will graduate and Jones could head to the NFL. That would at least allow Cage to involve himself in the rotation.

2016 - 81 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 FF, 2 FR
2015 - 40 tackles, 3.5 sacks
2014 - 38 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 1 FR, 1 INT
2013 - 3 tackles. 0.5 sacks
