Tore ACL in Early October

The Player
Trevon Grimes is a 6-foot-4 202-pound wide receiver who played for St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is rated the No. 5 receiver in the nation per the 247Sports Composite. Last season Grimes caught 15 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns before being lost for the season with a torn ACL the first week of October. As a junior he caught 27 passes for 496 yards and seven touchdowns. As a sophomore in 2014 he caught six passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Obviously a tall target at 6-foot-4, Grimes can also run very well. He is generally timed in the high 4.4s at combines and is adept at using that speed to get open deep. He uses his body well to shield defenders and is able to battle for the football and go up and get it before it becomes a true 50/50 ball. And when it is a 50/50 ball, he makes it closer to 60/40. Grimes doesn't have a huge catalog of catches, so he is still showing and possibly learning what he is capable of. He also had offers from Florida, Miami, Georgia, Florida State and Alabama.

The Comparison
There aren't many apt comparisons for a 6-foot-4 receiver who runs 4.4s, but how about a young Terrelle Pryor had he never played quarterback? Or maybe Cincinnati Bengals receiver A.J. Green or Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones. That is definitely not to say that he is those players right now or is going to be those players, just that when you are looking for comparisons of players with the same physical dynamics of Trevon Grimes, sometimes you have to look in some very rarefied circles. If we're just confining this to former Buckeye receivers, then perhaps Michael Thomas would be in the ballpark, or Michael Jenkins, but few players possess the aggression of Thomas and it isn't always something that can be taught.

The Fit
If you can't fit a receiver like Trevon Grimes into your offense, it might be time to find a new offense. Given his size, he could end up at 'X' for the Buckeyes, which is the go-to position among the receivers. However, he also has the speed to be a deep weapon, which is what makes him so unique. It is not difficult to fit him into Ohio State's offense even without knowing exactly which position he will ultimately play. Just get him on the field and the rest will take care of itself.

The Depth Chart
When Trevon Grimes finally makes it to campus, he will be one of about eight outside receivers on scholarship. While he will be one of the low men on the totem poll when he arrives, the totem pole isn't all that tall to begin with. Austin Mack and Binjimen Victor showed last year that if you're ready, you'll play. A depth chart is as fluid as the players make it. The Buckeyes have been searching for a deep threat for two years now. If Grimes is that player, then the depth chart won't matter.

The Future
Obviously there will be no plans to redshirt Grimes, but that decision won't be made by anybody other than the receiver himself. If the belief is that Grimes is the type of player who could be done in three seasons, then Urban Meyer is going to want to get him on the field for each of those three seasons. He is coming off of an ACL tear, so they'll bring him along slowly. His injury happened about the same week as Nick Bosa one year earlier, and we saw how effective Bosa was from the outset. Grimes expects to be ready to go for the start of camp and that will absolutely be Mickey Marotti's goal as well.

2015 - 27 recs for 496 yards and 7 TDs
