The Player
Amir Riep is a 5-foot-11 185-pound cornerback out of Cincinnati Colerain. He signed with Ohio State over offers from Alabama, Michigan, Oklahoma, Georgia, Florida State, Notre Dame and many others. Riep is skilled both in off coverage and press coverage, using his eyes while in off coverage to keep up with the football when necessary. He is adept at coming off of his man and helping out teammates when the ball is headed their way. While in coverage, he has a tremendous ability to locate the ball as it gets to his receiver, routinely knocking it down or intercepting it. He triggers well on screen passes and has no problem getting physical against the run.

The Comparison
His size and ability to cover ground and also find the football are reminiscent of Marshon Lattimore. He's just a smooth defender who rarely looked out of place in high school. His physicality, however, reminds me of Kurt Coleman, who began his career at Ohio State as a cornerback but moved to safety, where he is still enjoying himself in the NFL.

The Fit
With the way Ohio State uses cornerbacks, Riep is a fit at a couple of positions. When you consider that the top three free safeties on the roster last season began their careers as cornerbacks, and Ohio State now likes to rotate three, if not four, cornerbacks throughout a game, the Buckeyes almost can't take enough corners. Riep's ability to track the ball and also be physical at the line of scrimmage makes him an ideal fit wherever he may end up.

The Depth Chart
There are likely going to be a couple of freshmen in the two-deep of the secondary and Riep could certainly be one of those guys. The Buckeyes are in search of a safety and three or four cornerbacks to fill out the depth chart. Riep's 2017 class features five cornerbacks and one safety, so even among his classmates there is going to be competition. There will be some second-year cornerbacks who are going to have a say in things as well.

The Future
Riep won't be enrolled until the summer, so he's going to miss out on spring football, which will put him behind all three of his cornerback classmates in Jeffrey Okudah, Shaun Wade, and Marcus Williamson. There will still be an opportunity to make a mark in fall camp, much like Jordan Fuller did last season to earn the backup spot to Damon Webb. — Tony Gerdeman
