4-star shooting guard JaQuan Lyle commits to Ohio State
By James Vogel

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Shortly after watching Ohio State drub No. 16 Maryland, 80-56, Thursday night at Value City Arena, Buckeye freshman D’Angelo Russell broke the news that 4-star guard JaQuan Lyle from Evansville, Ind., had decided to become a Buckeye.

Confirming Russell’s post and a report from, Lyle confirmed his commitment of becoming the latest member of Thad Matta’s 2015 class via his Twitter Friday.

Lyle arrived on campus Wednesday for an official two-day visit after Matta had made a trip to Bradenton, Fla., and IMG Academy to watch him play. The 6-foot-5-inch, 220-pound combo guard attended Huntington Prep last season before enrolling at IMG after he did not qualify academically to attend Oregon, who he signed with last April.

Lyle, ranked the No. 38 overall prospect by 247Sports for 2015, sat courtside Thursday to get one last look at the Buckeyes, and he is believed to be next in line to replace Russell if and when the superstar freshman declares for the NBA Draft.

He becomes the fifth — and likely last — member of Matta’s 2015 class, joining point guard A.J. Harris from Dayton, shooting guard Austin Grandstaff of Rockwall, Texas, forward Mickey Mitchell of Plano, Texas, and center Daniel Giddens of Mableton, Ga. Lyle's commitment jumps Ohio State from 10th to sixth in's recruiting class rankings.

Since Lyle is spending a postgraduate year at IMG Academy in Florida after failing to make the grade at Oregon, he is eligible to play right away for the Buckeyes. In his final year at Huntington Prep he averaged 17 points, 6.4 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game.

Russell’s photo not only congratulated Lyle, but the caption he posted leaves the door open for his return to Ohio State for a sophomore season. That, though, seems unlikely as he has been listed as high as No. 2 in some 2015 NBA Mock Drafts.
