Williams Shines Bright in Otherwise Mediocre Night
By Caroline Rice

COLUMBUS, OH - A win is a win, but according to Ohio State head coach Thad Matta, the Buckeyes didn’t have a great performance against Rutgers.

“We didn’t play at the level I wanted us to play at. We did some good things but it wasn’t all the way through the game at the level I was hoping that we would play at” said Matta.

The player that really stood out from the bunch was redshirt Junior guard Kam Williams.

Williams tied his career high with 23 points which he previously scored against Navy on November 11th, 2016. Against the Scarlet Knights, Williams scored his 23 points off only 15 shots, making 8 of 15 field goals, 3 of 5 three-pointers, and 4 of 5 free throws. Williams also added three rebounds and one assist. Williams scored 10 of the Buckeyes last 14 points.

For Williams this was a great feeling that he hopes can help the team and continue this win streak.

“It felt good. Just good execution team wise and I was just making good shots and my teammates were setting great screens for me, so I thank them for that” said Williams. “It’s a great feeling like you said we just gotta keep building on it as a team and just keep riding the wave.”

For Matta, it was not just Williams’ shooting that helped this team get the victory.

“I thought Kam was terrific tonight. He had energy, he was talking, he was defending, chasing screens, was hard to guard, and he had great timing to his offense, so that was a very positive thing” said Matta.

Although the Buckeyes cut the game close, Williams helped this team pull off the win. One play that put Ohio State on top was a four-point play with a minute to go in the game. Williams hit a three-pointer and was fouled. Williams made his free throw and put the Buckeyes up four 66-62 over Rutgers after being tied 62-62.

Williams hasn’t been a poor shooter this season, but he was hot at the right time when his teammates needed him. This is something he hopes can continue over into the next game as he heads home to Maryland.
