The Buckeyes and Hawkeyes shared the league title earlier this month and it looks like their rivalry is picking up right where it left off in the national tournament.  Ohio State currently leads the NCAA tournament with 23 points. Iowa has 20. Oklahoma State, Penn State and Missouri round out the top five with 19.5, 18.5 and 18 points respectively.

The Buckeyes have eight wrestlers remaining in the tournament. Five of them have yet to lose in the double-elimination competition and have qualified for the quarter-finals. They are Nathan Tomasello at 125 pounds, Logan Stieber at 141, Bo Jordan at 165, Kenny Courts at 184 and Kyle Snyder at 197.

Three other wrestlers, Johnn Dijulius at 133, Josh Demas at 157 and Mark Martin at 174 have suffered one loss but are still alive in the tournament and can still finish as high as third place.

Only two OSU wrestlers have been eliminated. At 149 Hunter Stieber lost his first match 9-7 and could not continue in his consolation match due to injury. At 295 Nick Tavanello lost twice by scores of 5-3 and 6-5 to be eliminated.

Like Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Penn State and Iowa have all qualified five wrestlers for the quarter finals. Missouri, Nebraska and Cornell are next-best with three wrestlers still undefeated.

OSU owes its slim  lead in the team standings to extra team points earned by dominant wins. Tomasello has scored a major decision and a pin, Logan Stieber a technical fall with an 18-1 win and also has a pin. Bo Jordan scored a pin and Kyle Snyder has two major decisions.

Overall, Ohio State wrestlers went 13-6 and had seven wins that were either by fall, major decision or technical fall.

Stieber now needs to win just three matches to win his fourth national championships, a feat accomplished just three other times in NCAA history.
